Fukushima leak is 'much worse than we were led to believe' Imagine that the catastophy was only out of profit reasons and that the backup-saveenergy-dieselgenerators were not built in Tsunamy-save building and got under water after the wave. The company did not made security constrution for that!

"Once it gets into the ground water, like a river flowing to the sea, you can't really stop a ground water flow. You can pump out water, but how many tanks can you keep putting on site?"

"It is not over yet by a long shot, Chernobyl was in many ways a one week fire-explosive event, nothing with the potential of this right on the ocean.

"We've been saying since 2011 that the reactor site is still leaking whether that's the buildings and the ground water or these new tank releases. There's no way to really contain all of this radioactive water on site."

Dr Ken Buesseler is a senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who has examined the waters around Fukushima.

Several scientists also raised concerns about the vulnerability of the huge amount of stored water on site to another earthquake.

There are also worries about the spent nuclear fuel rods that are being cooled and stored in water pools on site. Mycle Schneider says these contain far more radioactive caesium than was emitted during the explosion at Chernobyl.

"There is absolutely no guarantee that there isn't a crack in the walls of the spent fuel pools. If salt water gets in, the steel bars would be corroded. It would basically explode the walls, and you cannot see that; you can't get close enough to the pools," he said.

The quantities of water they are dealing with are absolutely gigantic," said Mycle Schneider, who has consulted widely for a variety of organisations and countries on nuclear issues.

Some 1,000 tanks have been built to hold the water. But these are believed to be at around 85% of their capacity and every day an extra 400 tonnes of water are being added.

What is the worse is the water leakage everywhere else - not just from the tanks. It is leaking out from the basements, it is leaking out from the cracks all over the place. Nobody can measure that.

"It is much worse than we have been led to believe, much worse," said Mr Schneider, who is lead author for the World Nuclear Industry status reports.

At news conference, the head of Japan's nuclear regulation authority Shunichi Tanaka appeared to give credence to Mr Schneider's concerns, saying that he feared there would be further leaks.

``We should assume that what has happened once could happen again, and prepare for more. We are in a situation where there is no time to waste," he told reporters.

The lack of clarity about the water situation and the continued attempts by Tepco to deny that water was leaking into the sea has irritated many researchers.

The "worsening situation" at Fukushima has prompted a former Japanese ambassador to Switzerland to call for the withdrawal of Tokyo's Olympic bid.

In a letter to the UN secretary general, Mitsuhei Murata says the official radiation figures published by Tepco cannot be trusted. He says he is extremely worried about the lack of a sense of crisis in Japan and abroad.

This view is shared by Mycle Schneider, who is calling for an international taskforce for Fukushima.

The CORES MAY MELT INTO THE EARTH'S CRUST if they do not continue to pump billions of litres of sea water each year onto the cores. THE FUKUSHIMA PROBLEM REQUIRES INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION. It is the biggest problem facing Mankind right now. It is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than who Obama wants to bomb this week... Fukushima will not go away.

If these Fukushima cores melt down it is called the 'CHINA SYNDROME' within the Nuclear Industry. That is, that if they stop cooling the cores with billions of gallons of sea-water, then the cores will heat up the bedrock and become a seething hot mass which will begin to sink directly into the Earth's core - supposedly burning all the way through to 'China'... That is what will happen if the billions of gallons of sea-water are stopped from being pumped into these cores.

However, the off-flow of contaminated water will eventually poison and kill all living creatures in the Pacific ocean. Mass deaths of fish and seals and birds are already being reported.

The options are narrow, to say the least. If the cores are allowed to heat up, then they will bore and melt their way to the GROUND WATER within the earth's crust and a giant NUCLEAR EXPLOSION WILL TAKE PLACE - plus, of course, the fresh ground water of the entire region of northern Japan will become contaminated.

I am sure, after having analysed the situation through the Japanese news sources, that this is the 'Catch 22' we are facing - and that the Japanese government need to develop some cutting-edge technology now to get those cores cooled down without contaminating the entire Pacific ocean.

There are already six nuclear cores rotting on the seabed from old Russian and American military submarines - another four cores washed into the ocean will probably send the ecological balance on a downward spiral. Residents of Hawaii and the West Coast of USA should take extra care in what they choose to eat from the sea. FYB shall continue reporting on this disaster - and make sure that YOU, yes YOU, take time out from your busy schedule and OPPOSE THE BUILDING OF ALL NUCLEAR PLANTS IN YOUR COUNTRY. JAPAN - Two and a half years after the Fukushima tragedy Japan does not want to admit how serious it is, but it is obvious the drastic environmental implications are to follow, Harvey Wasserman, journalist and advocate for renewable energy, told RT.
RT: Japanese officials have admitted a leak at Fukushima has been happening for two years and is worse than earlier thought. Why did it take so long to evaluate the actual repercussions of the tragedy and take decisive measures to tackle them?
HW: The Japanese authorities have been covering up the true depth of the disaster because they don’t want to embarrass themselves and the global nuclear industry and they are trying to open up another nuclear plant in Japan. When the Japanese people now find out that the accident is worse than we thought and they have been leaking many tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean for almost two and a half years, this is a catastrophe. Tokyo Electric has no idea how to control this accident. This is absolutely terrifying after two and a half years. To find out that these reactors have been out of control, now that they can’t control this they don’t know what’s going on. This is not a primitive backward country; this is Japan with advanced technology. It has very serious implications for nuclear power all over the world.
RT: Why the plant’s operator failed to contain the leak?
HW: Because they don’t know what to do. This has never happened before. You have three explosions; you have four nuclear reactors that are severely compromised. No one ever planned for this. This is an apocalyptic event. This is something that could contaminate the entire Pacific Ocean. It is extremely serious. The reality is that Tokyo Electric does not know what is happening and does not know how to control what is going on. Our entire planet is at risk here. This is two and a half years after these explosions and they are still in the dark. It’s terrifying.
RT: An estimated 300 tonnes of contaminated water is spilling daily into the ocean. How come Tepco insists the leaks still pose no big threat to the environment?
HW: They are lying; they can’t face the reality of this situation. When have very serious quantities of radiation going into the Pacific Ocean. There is no medical or epidemiological or scientific basis for estimating how much damage this will cost. We are on entirely new ground here and this cannot go by without a serious impact on the entire human race. This is a terrible tragedy. The problem is that the company does not want to admit how serious this is and the government of Japan doesn’t want to admit how serious this is. And even if the government of Japan steps in, they don’t know what to do. This particular administration in Japan wants to open the other nuclear plants. 50 nuclear plants have been shut in Japan since the accident and they want to reopen them.
RT: According to some estimates it will take 40 years to clean-up the contaminated area. Why so long?
HW: That is not long enough. It will never be cleaned up. We have materials there that are radioactive, that are harmful, and that are dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years. They can talk about cleaning it up in 40 years but it will never be cleaned up. You will never be able to go back on that site. The radioactivity will be in the waters forever.
RT: What long-term impact of the radiation leak on Japan and its neighboring countries we should expect in the future?
HW: There are serious health impacts. People will be harmed. We are seeing 40% rate of thyroid damage among children in the area and this is a huge impact and it will go up, not down. More and more radiation is escaping from the water and tritium into the atmosphere. And radiation to the thyroid is very serious, especially among small children and we are already seeing a 40% rate. People will be suffering for hundreds of years. I interviewed people in central Pennsylvania a year after the (3 Mile Island) accident and discovered tremendous health impacts among the people there. We know that Chernobyl did tremendous damage to people in Belarus and Ukraine and now we are going to see it again in Fukushima. -RT

The wasting of our planet for all time
