When the picture was taken, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were two popular people. Aung San Suu Kyi received the peace prize in 1991 and Barack Obama received the peace prize before he took office in 2008,-ie. 2 years before Suu Kyi was released from prison and came to power. To move around in f. ex. Yangon was not as hard as in f. ex. Bangkok, Thailand Myanmar is still heavily characterized by the Colonial era under the British, so the street signs were marked in English and not in Burmese. A lot otherwise also felt the mark of respect / (submissiveness) to the British still, I felt. ′′ Everyone ′′ was favorable and able to speak English, so it was such a simple and safe country to move around in, compared to many others in South East Asia.
By the way, Aung Sang Suu Kyi is married to an Englishman (whom she met during studying in London). So it's not natural that that culture tradition should have been changed under her leadership.
Even though Suu Kyi (b. 1945) was a very popular and respected head of state. She is the daughter of Burmese freedom fighter, General Aung Sang, who was killed just before the country was liberated from the British in 1947. (Britain ′′ annexed ′′ Burma as colony in 1885, and left it under India. ))
However, Suu Kyi has obviously been surrounded by people she didn't necessarily have handpicked herself.
After so many years in prison, one might understand that her freedom and leadership have not been completely without conditions...! Therefore, Suu Kyi has never been able to be a strong leader, even though she has always had a strong radiance and appears with a strong personality.
How to understand what is happening there now?
Myanmar is a relatively large country with very different topography and many regions. It includes the highest mountains in the Himalaya mountain range towards China in the north to the large, flat area with many miles long tidal belt in the south.
