Pr Didier Raoult:  In Marseille, we diagnosed 120 positive cases, there were two deaths over 87 years old. They would also die last year. Out of 100 samples from people who have a respiratory infection, these are rather serious cases, when we test 20 viruses and 8 bacteria, there are 50% of which we do not know what they have, it is our great ignorance. For everyone else, there are 19 seasonal viruses, which also kill. Endemic coronaviruses kill more here than Chinese. I am constantly confronting the causes of mortality throughout the region with this kind of anxiety-provoking bellows that is rising: for the moment, we are more likely to die from things other than Covid-19. After six days of treatment, 75% of patients have a negative viral load, are they still cured?
Prof. Didier Raoult:  They are cured of the virus. But if you have lung damage, it won't go away in three days. We don't know for the moment either if, once healed, you can fall ill again, this was not described by the Chinese who are two months ahead of us.

What about the 25% who are still positive? Does their situation worsen as it is said around the 7th and 8th days?
Pr Didier Raoult:  We have not had any deterioration in the cases treated but we do not see people in serious conditions. For now, severe cases are those that are not detected or treated and come with very severe respiratory failure. They go directly to intensive care and they will die there. If we screen and treat people early there is bound to be a better chance of saving them than 48 hours before the terminal phase.

Your strategy since the start of the epidemic has been to mobilize the entire IHU to carry out massive screening, why, this was not a national strategy from the start?
Prof. Didier Raoult:  It's not my strategy, it's common sense. I don't know why it's not a national strategy, it's a political choice. I'm doing my duty, period. I do what I have to do, I play my score in a room. But it was not I who invented the theater, nor the text. I am the only one with a classic thought on infectious diseases when everyone is losing their nerves ...

What about the side effects of treatment with hydroxychloroquine?
Pr Didier Raoult:  What they say about side effects is simply delusional. These are people who haven't opened a medical book in years. More than a billion people have eaten it, people who suffer from lupus take it for decades ... I know these drugs very well, I have treated 4,000 people with Plaquenil for 20 years. It's not me who am weird, it's people who are ignorant. I will not be taught the toxicity of this drug.

The government announced to expand trials on hydroxychloroquine but by teams independent of yours, why?
Prof. Didier Raoult:  It's normal. Until 30 or 40 years ago, when dealing with diseases that we treated badly or not, the methodology, we did not care. The first guy that had a staph infection, he was given penicillin, he was cured and everyone was happy. As we became more and more competent, we had to do double-blind studies, then make data public so that there were no cheaters, in particular because of the financial stakes. Today, we know from the Chinese that the average carriage of the virus is 20 days. We have the means to measure the viral load, we see that it is going down, so it is that it works. We didn't need a control group. I am happy with the expansion of trials with drugs, which work, I am just a doctor. If you have any doubts about my credibility, that's not my problem. There are people being treated all over the world, I don't feel more responsible for the sick in Paris than in Korea. The smartest will be the best cared for. I'm not trying to be arrogant.
